3D Acquisition Technique and Aware Heritage Modelling
- Authors

This resource introduces the basic concepts of 3D modelling for cultural heritage, focusing on 3D acquisition techniques and the broader concept of Aware Heritage Modelling. First, the three main modelling approaches are defined: source-based, reality-based, and hybrid. The focus then shifts to reality-based modelling, presenting the most widespread techniques — range-based, image-based, and topographic methods — through their instruments, workflows, strengths, and limits. AI-based techniques are briefly presented as emerging tools that can complement traditional methods. Finally, the need for a critical and aware approach is stressed, in which 3D reconstruction becomes a documented, interoperable and reusable knowledge base, grounded in metadata, paradata, and FAIR principles.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this resource, learners will be able to:
- describe the relevance of 3D models in cultural heritage for documentation, analysis and preservation
- explain the differences between source-based, reality-based and hybrid modelling approaches
- understand the advantages and limitations of range-based, image-based and topographic techniques in creating 3D models
- discuss the complimentary role of AI-based techniques
- understand the concept of Aware Heritage Modelling and the importance of documentation in the digitsation process including the FAIR principles
